Why Do Dentures Get Loose?

The most common reason is bone and gum shrinkage, which naturally occurs after tooth loss. When your teeth are removed, the jawbone no longer gets stimulation from chewing forces, so over time it begins to resorb (shrink). Your gums also change shape, meaning the denture that once fit snugly no longer has the same foundation.

Some other reasons include:

  • Weight loss (affects facial and oral tissue)

  • Aging (changes in facial muscles and bone density)

  • Wear and tear of the denture base

What Is a Denture Reline?

A denture reline is a simple procedure where the underside of your denture (the part that touches your gums) is resurfaced to match the current shape of your mouth. Instead of replacing the whole denture, the reline fills in the gaps caused by gum shrinkage, making your denture fit more snugly again.

There are two main types of relines:

1. Hard Reline

  • Made of acrylic, like your original denture base

  • Provides a long-lasting, firm fit

  • Typically recommended for full dentures and those who want maximum durability

2. Soft Reline

  • Made of a softer, flexible material

  • Great for patients with sensitive gums, sore spots, or thin gum tissue

  • Offers more cushioning and comfort

  • May need more frequent replacement (every 1–2 years)

How Do You Know If You Need a Reline?

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be time:

✅ Dentures feel loose or shift while talking or eating

✅ Increased sore spots or irritation

✅ You use a lot of denture adhesive

✅ Clicking sounds when speaking

✅ Changes in your bite or facial appearance

The Benefits of a Reline or Soft Liner

  • Improved comfort and fit

  • Better chewing and speaking ability

  • Reduced sore spots or pressure points

  • Less reliance on adhesives

  • Restores confidence in your smile

Don't Wait – A Simple Reline Can Make a Big Difference

Relining is a fast, affordable way to extend the life of your dentures and keep them feeling secure. If your dentures are loose, don't wait until they start causing pain or affect your quality of life. Schedule a visit with your dentist or denturist to see if a hard or soft reline is right for you.
